John Leopold was elected to the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors in November 2008. He represents the First District, which includes Live Oak, Soquel, the Summit Area, Santa Cruz Gardens and Carbonera. John previously served on the Cabrillo College Governing Board for 8 years, leading the effort to pass a bond for the college in 2004.
As a member of the Board of Supervisors, John has worked with the community to develop an effective Vacation Rental Ordinance, sensible gun shop regulations, a set of budget policies that prioritize services to the community, and medical cannabis regulations. John engaged hundreds of community members in developing community projects as part of the Redevelopment Agency and criminal justice reforms efforts in response to the state’s prison realignment. He led the board is banning hydraulic fracking in Santa Cruz County and securing Sunny Cove Beach for permanent public use. John played a leadership role in the acquisition of the branch rail line through Santa Cruz County and the development of a master plan for the Monterey Bay Scenic Trail (sometimes known as the Rail Trail).
John has worked collaboratively with our schools in the creation of a Youth Center with the Live Oak School District and the Santa Cruz Boys and Girls Club, and new recreational facilities with the Loma Prieta and Happy Valley School Districts.
John lives in Live Oak with his wife Teresa and has two daughters, Rose and Ana.
