BUS OPERATOR |
SALARY: $13.92 / $26.57 AFTER 6 MONTHS / $19.10 per hour (PERS 2.5% @ 55 - highest year)
TYPE OF RECRUITMENT: Open
POSITION DESCRIPTION: Under supervision, operates transit buses in revenue service; collects passenger fares; provides information to passengers; aids passengers in boarding or departing; operates mobile radio; operates buses, vans and other vehicles not in revenue service; and performs other related duties as required.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: Operates transit buses and related equipment including passenger lifts; collects fares and verifies valid passes and identification cards; conducts ridership surveys; reports bus stop and bus shelter problems; receives and transmits communications over a mobile radio unit; coordinates passenger transfers; reports schedule delays; completes and files reports including accidents, detours, vehicle inspections, fares and passes, and other incidents; makes recommendations for safety and route improvements and other office activities.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of:
safe driving practices and good public relations.
Ability to:safely operate District buses and other equipment; calculate time and read road maps; verify correct cash fares, passes, and identification cards, deal courteously with the public; read, speak, and write English at the level necessary to perform the duties of the position; understand and respond in a tactful manner to the transportation concerns of the elderly and disabled; and establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. Willingness and ability to work unusual hours including nights, weekends and holidays. (Ability to speak Spanish is desirable.)
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS: Possession of a current motor vehicle license and the ability to obtain a California Class B driver’s permit prior to appointment. Motor vehicle violations within the last ten years that may disqualify an applicant include, but are not limited to: convictions involving drugs or alcohol, hit and run, or reckless driving. Motor vehicle violations within the last five years that may disqualify an applicant include, but are not limited to: more than one moving violation, more than one vehicle accident in which the applicant was found most at fault, and more than one vehicle license suspension.A good attendance record in previous employment. Fingerprints will be taken and criminal histories verified. A drug test will be administered as required by the Federal Transit Administration including random drug and alcohol testing after employment.
