MECHANIC I |
SALARY: $20.38 - $25.81 Per Hour (PERS 2.5% @ 55 - highest year)
TYPE OF RECRUITMENT: Open
JOB SUMMARY: Under close supervision, performs semi-skilled tasks in the repair, modification and maintenance of District’s buses, automobiles, trucks and other District equipment and performs other related duties as required.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: Inspects, repairs, installs and adjusts mechanical and electrical systems and components of District vehicles; removes and installs fare boxes, bulbs, wiper blades, hoses and belts; relines and adjusts brakes; repairs destination signs and passenger cords; lubricates chassis, changes transmission and engine oil and filters; reads written work orders and completes written records; operates and maintains shop equipment; makes emergency repairs in the field; performs routine maintenance and servicing of equipment; operates District buses, trucks, and other vehicles; may utilize District computer hardware and software in the performance of duties.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS: Any combination of training and experience equivalent to: one year full-time experience as a heavy duty diesel mechanic; OR two years full-time experience performing automotive repairs; OR graduation from an approved diesel mechanic training program and six months heavy duty diesel mechanic experience. Possession of a current motor vehicle driver’s license and the ability to obtain a California Class B drivers permit prior to appointment. Motor vehicle violations within the last ten years that may disqualify an applicant include, but are not limited to: convictions involving drugs or alcohol, hit and run, or reckless driving. Motor vehicle violations within the last five years that may disqualify an applicant include, but are not limited to: more than one moving violation, more than one vehicle accident in which the applicant was found most at fault; and more than one vehicle license suspension. Fingerprints will be taken and criminal histories verified. A drug test will be administered as required by the Federal Transit Administration including random drug and alcohol testing after employment.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of:
The theory and operation of gasoline and diesel engines (CNG knowledge helpful but not required); procedures used in servicing buses, trucks, and automobiles; vehicle electrical systems and hydraulic systems; safe work practices.
Ability
to:Operate welding equipment and other tools and equipment; read and understand technical manuals and schematics; operate mechanical and servicing equipment; and perform heavy physical labor.
